Do you agree with the definition for ‘art’ as it’s explained in the reading above? Why or why not? Can you add to the definition? Is your definition coming from a subjective or objective perspective?

I agree with the definition of art as “the expression of our experience.” Artists express themselves from what they know and their worldview.

I don’t think you can ever actually categorize art as any one thing. It is constantly changing and people who work in an artistic field change with it but even people who don’t work in that field can create art, you can create art on accident. What someone does just to amuse themselves while bored someone else can consider a work of art.
Because of this, I don’t have a definition for art and I try not to keep one.

I agree with the definition as it is discussed in the reading that art is ever changing in its definition and varies with who is doing the defining. Like the adage, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” art is essentially the same. The definition of beauty varies from person to person, from culture to culture, and as the times change. I believe that this is also true of art. I would have to agree with Thomas Merton in his work No Man is an Island, “art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” In an earlier post, I described art as my therapy. It is a way I can work through my emotions and go on a soul-searching journey. Without art, I truly believe that the world would be a much darker, much uninspiring place to live.

we are ,our values , our expression is art .its a feeling to express our joy ,pain. the voice of our thoughts , ideas .it is a tangible entity .

#174

I agree, Art reflect our personalities.

#175

Art is a creative expression of the mind! It can be brought to life using any means, media or medium.

I define art to be active in several categories. First of all, art is unique and very cultural. Every human being short, tall, fat or skinny is a live form of art. The different shapes, sizes, distinctive features, personalities helps to creature a picture that represents their being. All of this I believe is apart of their personal art form.

I liked what I read in the introduction: Art is the expression of our experience. For me art is something that stays with me, which makes me think, which makes an impression on me, which after years and years still makes an impression on me just thinking about it. That can be literature, painting, sculpture, anything. I myself practise fibre arts (lace, wall hangings) but I appreciate any form of art as long as it touches me in some way.

Q: Do you agree with the definition for ‘art’ as it’s explained in the reading above? Why or why not? Can you add to the definition? Is your definition coming from a subjective or objective perspective?

Like many definitions of complex things it becomes so broad as to become almost meaningless. I am not even convinced art is uniquely human, as there was Congo the chimp who painted once. I am sure Dolphins embody art in their swim and play and probably whales in their songs.

I don’t think art makes the viewer question or feel anything by some sort of magical transition from the artist to the viewer, it is simply a product of the richness of a particular human’s experience and imagination - the richness of our exterior and interior life in short. I think you will think, feel or question whatever it is you bring from your own exterior and interior life when exploring what it is you share or do not share (in any measurement: culturally, biologically, ideologically) with the maker of the art.

In the end it states that art is a question of ‘agreement’ (about what is art and how we define it), which I agree with, but it doesn’t say much really except that art, like virtually everything else about human life, is an agreed-upon definition between people.

Definition: Art is uniquely human and tied directly to culture. It takes the ordinary and makes it extraordinary. It asks questions about who we are, what we value, the meaning of beauty and the human condition. As an expressive medium it allows us to experience sublime joy, deep sorrow, confusion and clarity. It tests our strengths, vulnerabilities and resolve. It gives voice to ideas and feelings, connects us to the past, reflects the present and anticipates the future. Along these lines, art history, combined with anthropology and literature, are three main sources in observing, recording and interpreting our human past. Visual art is a rich and complex subject whose definition is in flux as the culture around it changes. Because of this, how we define art is in essence a question of agreement. In this respect, we can look again to the dictionary’s definition for an understanding of exactly what to look for when we proclaim something as ‘art.’

No doubt that art is reflective. Different people work on different perspectives of art as an example a person interested in art having some kind of pain or trauma surely he 'll make other people realize with his pain through his art either it is music, a painting, a sculpture, a photograph etc. but according to my view point every best and worst this present in this universe reflects art through its presence the sun rise or the sunset, the fresh leaf on a branch or a dry autumn leaf, a dead flower or a developing bud everything reflects a better part of art by its presence. One needs the sight to see. I paint different things by removing the difference between the fantasy and the reality and merge them into a new form to create my kind of art, because art is creating something collecting different imaginations and skills.

ok then

love this. i agree with you 100%

How would you define art?

Christian, here again!

Art is defined very differently by different people, however, I think Warhol said it best, “Art is Anything You Can Get Away With”.

It’s in the eye of the beholder. What someone considers art someone else may not consider it at all.

#184

How would you define art?

Art is anything that stimulates your senses. It could be a building or a sculpture. A song, a piece of literature or a painting. It could be a smell or a flavor. It could be a perfectly architectured bird’s nest or the perfect spotted pattern on a quail’s egg.

It is anything that brings the human to be present in their senses and evokes emotion of any kind.

Art means everything to me. Whether I make a wire sculpture or a greeting card, art will always be apart of my life.

Do you agree with the definition for ‘art’ as it’s explained in the reading above? Why or why not? Can you add to the definition? Is your definition coming from a subjective or objective perspective?
“It is the expression of our experience.” I agree, because each one has his own art. You can cook artistically, talk artistically, move artistically, smile artistically, play sports artistically, you can actually think artistically and do your everyday duties and job artistically. So Art is in each and every individual of us.

“Art is uniquely human and tied directly to culture.” yes Art is a human and it differs from one to another, as unique as our finger print however, it is not necessarily tied to the individual culture in which I don’t agree with that specifically. It is more tied to the soul of each individual and might be affected by our experiences and culture but not necessarily.

“It takes the ordinary and makes it extraordinary.” I Don’t agree with that, what actually art does to a specific subject is that it focuses the senses on it, making zoom on it, living the present in this specific subject exposed. It makes us see the beauty in things we may be take its presence in our reality for granted. Art is like prayers or meditations. Art is seeing the beauty in each and every single detail in our reality in different many aspects as many as there are different individuals with different souls and different finger prints.

“It asks questions about who we are, what we value, the meaning of beauty and the human condition.” It doesn’t question, it answers." Yes, it allows us to experience others point of views, others beauty perspectives and others feelings.

“It gives voice to ideas and feelings, connects us to the past, reflects the present and anticipates the future.” It doesn’t give voice, It is just connecting us consciously or subconsciously with other timelines and perspectives or ideas.

“Visual art is a rich and complex subject whose definition is in flux as the culture around it changes. Because of this, how we define art is in essence a question of agreement.”

It is flux for the fact that we have different perspectives may be affected by culture, society, religion, or family but not necessarily.

for me, I can define art as:
Art is like meditation or prayer, it makes us live the moment and focus on the beauty of very detailed things we take their presence for granted. It differs from an individual to another just like a finger print, and it feels beautiful to see the beauty of others finger prints, the beauty in the differences in perspectives about the beauty that their eyes see.

I like the Brodsky definition. As for me, anything that expresses a emotion within you in the form of a visual/written/other medium is art - especially emotions that cannot be expressed through routine conversations. This covers performance art - often a form of protest; poetry; paintings; sketches; abstract writing etc.

#188

If art is subjective, then anything can be perceived as art, and if everything is art, nothing is. To say art is reflective, one must first consider, reflective of what, self? But what is self, mind, thought, perception, ego? We may observe art, and in doing so, observe ourselves, but perhaps the goal should be to observe ourselves, observing art.

#189

The definition of art I concur most from the paragraph given is that art “asks questions about who we are, what we value, the meaning of beauty and the human condition.” When I encounter a work of art I think about how I feel in response to what I have experienced. I think about how does it fit in or is different from the world around me. Art is absolutely the expression of the human condition and the environment it occupies.

I rely like your definition of art and to add to that I also think is the deep filling of imagination that brings out a persons cultural abilities into reality for the benefit of others .
