Courses that no longer offer certificates for CS-Curriculum

Hi all,
This may be a very stupid question, but non the less I am a little bit at a loss here.
I did notice that certain courses for the CS-Curriculum will no longer offer certificates after the 17th of August 2018, and that “they will be moved to the legacy site”.
I am not quite clear on what that exactly means “moved to the legacy site”;

  • Does that mean these courses will no longer appear in the list of available courses?
  • How could I access these courses if I still would like to do them?
  • Would it make sense to subscribe to these courses now even if I plan doing them at a much later stage?
I would be grateful for any pointers as of what would be the wisest course of action.

Thank you very much in advance

Hi @andrihuber (Andri)

Let me start this reply with a “Disclaimer”: I don’t work at / for Saylor, so please don’t consider mine to be an Official answer.

I’ll leave my comments inline below, interspersed with your questions:

Don’t worry: that is NOT a stupid question, at all

That means those particular courses in the “CS” (Computer Science) curriculum will no longer be considered what Saylor calls “Supported Courses” - which are courses that are in the “Course Catalog” at Saylor’s (Moodle-based) online learning Platform available at - and will be moved to the so-called “Legacy Courseware” (static) web site -

You may find the following Official FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) web page about the “Legacy Courseware” to be very informative:

As you may see in that FAQ, “Legacy Courses” are “courses that are open for learning but that are not actively maintained ▸▸▸ LEGACY COURSES NO LONGER ISSUE CERTIFICATES OF COMPLETION.”.

It means those courses will no longer appear in the list of available courses at the web site AND / BUT that they will appear in the in the list of available courses at the “Legacy Courseware” - - web site.

I think the course materials for those courses should appear in the “Legacy Courseware” - - web site after 17 August, 2018

When you say “at a much later stage”, do you mean after 17-Aug-2018 (when they will be moved to the Legacy Courseware web page)? If that’s the case, I would say that it doesn’t matter.

I hope this helps

Hi there,

First of all, thank you very much for your reply!

This actually helps a lot and clarifies everything I was not quite clear on.

I really appreciate the detailed answer so again, thank you!

Hi Andri,

You’re welcome. Thank you so much for your kind words! :slightly_smiling_face:

Meanwhile (after your original post and my reply), you may have also noticed that Saylor Academy has published yesterday (16 June 2018) a Blog post (written by Sean Connor - @sean - who is the Director of Community Relations at Saylor Academy) that explains these changes in the “Computer Science” courses (changes that mostly affect people who are taking Saylor’s “Computer Science” Curriculum" Certificate Program):

… which has the corresponding Discourse (discussion forum) topic at:

You may also be interested in reading Saylor’s web page about “Certificate Programs”:

That is awesome! Exactly the information I was hoping to find.
Thank you for sharing this, it has been quite an interesting read.

Firstly thank you for the kind information regarding the changes made to the courses after 17 AUG 2018…
It made me clear on the actual happenings with the courses…
Here is a request from many of us regarding a single course that is, "Compilers "under CSE section… It would be helpful for many of us if this course is brought back as soon as possible… if possible! because we are dependent on saylor for learning most of our unknowns… If this compiler course is back… then it would be of a great help!!!
Thank you in advance!!
Please kindly if possible consider our request regarding the compilers course…
