Public Relations Response for Unit 1

#1

1.) How do the historical foundations of public relations apply to current day news? Please share some examples.
We still see historical foundations of PR in our society via Social Media, New Stations, and lastly, Politics. With the recent presidential election ads, campaigns, and debates constantly being aired on television, it is safe to say that public relations play a part in the way the candidates are being portrayed with the intent to gain potential voters. Another way to think of PR is essentially saying that money is power, and that if you have the money, or in this case, running for office, you can pay people who are willing to go to extreme measures to save your image.

2.) How might the role of public relations fit within a larger marketing campaign?
PR fits within a larger marketing campaign because both marketing and public relations go hand in hand. Public Relations has to do with “persuasion”, because you are persuading public opinions and marketing is persuasion because you are trying to get clients or potential clients to want to invest money with your business.

3.) How do you think developments in social media are impacting the field of public relations?
Social Media has impacted the field of “Public Relations” in a major way. With technology constantly evolving and becoming more and more essential for everyday functioning and for a great number jobs, PR employees are becoming increasingly dependent on social media to do most things they could once do without, like communicating with their customers. Social Media has creatively constructed several platforms for PR employees to utilize, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snap Chat with the intention to let them market their products or services to the intended audiences- free of charge.

1.) How do the historical foundations of public relations apply to current day news? The “spin” has always been influential, both in the past and current day. I don’t intend to use “spin” with its negative connotations, but simply that each group of publics has always needed to hear something different. There is a positive way to look at all news but it does take particular PR person to be able to see and deliver it. When a company is in crisis, today and in the past, communication with a human element is imperative. In 1982 Johnson & Johnson had some bottles of Tylenol laced with potassium cyanide and 7 people died. It was the sincere and emotional empathy shown by the company that took the publics blame away from the company and focused on the prime suspect.

2.) How might the role of public relations fit within a larger marketing campaign? In a long term marketing campaign the PR role is more visibly active. The end result is the same, but the role is quite different. The marketing campaign is set for long term profit and long term advertising. Meanwhile the PR role is acquiring accolades for the company. Ie…News releases, on a twice monthly basis…All the company news to be put out to the public and stakeholders in conjunction with the marketing tools will make the campaign more impactful.

3.) How do you think developments in social media are impacting the field of public relations? Social media is a boon to the PR field. Information gets out faster and to more people than ever before. Traditional ways of media and news papers still have their place but particularly LinkedIn, twitter and Facebook, are excellent tools to enhance the PR message outreach.
